Reimagining our City Streets

Since 2018, we’ve produced street performances and festivals, including many celebrating Park(ING) Day, a global movement where people transform parking spots into public places for joyful gatherings. Our performances create surreal spectacles that imagine and advocate for more sustainable and equitable uses of streets. We collaborate with many community partners and artists for these events. As theaters were shuttered during COVID, we focused on street programs that maintained the vibrancy of city life during the pandemic. Now, we continue to advocate for car-free Open Streets. Here’s a sampling of prior programs.

Street Festivals

Jody Sperling Time Lapse Dance was a central attraction for our Earth Day event. The performance was spectacular! From start to finish, the dancers captured the essence of Earth Day with their energy, movement, and creativity. The performance was held on a bustling open street with lots of activity but the group’s choreography created a sense of unity and connection, making it feel like we were all part of one big party! The audience, which included young children, were captivated and many passersby also stopped to enjoy. Overall, the performance is a testament to Jody’s talent, creativity, and commitment to community. I would highly recommend Jody and her group to anyone looking for a unique and captivating dance experience.

A Time Lapse Dance of Melting Ice

With ecokinetics we are exploring the relationship between people and place. How can dance be patterned to echo and extend the ecological systems humans are entangled with? Can a person dancing on sea ice make us see ice differently? As an artistic researcher and participant in a polar science mission to the Chukchi Sea, choreographer Jody Sperling danced on the melting polar ice cap. Her research had outcomes in Ice Floe, a short film (below) and Ice Cycle, a stage work for the company. Her journey is one example of how this work relates people and place.

We look forward to collaborating with you.

Our site-based work seeks to bring human movers into more embodied, sustainable, and equitable relationships with the world we inhabit. While ecokinetics is a new inquiry for Time Lapse Dance, we recognize that Indigenous and Native cultures have long traditions that demonstrate sustainable and embodied ways of being on this planet. We hold deep respect for Indigenous Wisdom and understand its importance for our very survival.
