Washed Up, Solo Distillation (2001)

Washed Up soloJody Sperling’s version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid uses an idiosyncratic lyricism to conjure up a mythic aquatic realm. Fluid acrobatics and preening gestures meld to suggest archetypal images of femininity. Quentin Chiappetta’s score mixes liquidy sounds with gamelan, cello, voice, and other instrumentations to create a lush underwater landscape. (10 minutes)

“In a solo version of ‘Washed Up,’ Sperling becomes the fairy-tale mermaid who loved a human, revealing dreamy, marine yearnings and then the painful reality (wonderfully imagined) of walking.” –Deborah Jowit, The Village Voice
