Wind Rose

Wind Rose continues choreographer Jody Sperling’s collaboration with environmental composer Matthew Burtner. A wind rose is a meteorological tool that graphically represents wind speed and direction at a particular location. This new work visualizes local and global winds patterns which are changing dramatically along with the earth’s climate. The choreography sculpts the air flow so the audience can feel the dance unfold. The five dancers push the boundaries of Sperling’s Fuller-influenced apparatus using it to whip and slap the air and add their own breathy vocalizations. The dance’s swirling rhythms echo patterns of atmospheric turbulence.
