“Comic acrobatic dance gone awry”
—Canada’s NAtional Post
cheap (1999)
Solo, 10 minutes
Inspired by early films of Variety dancers, this solo offers a witty commentary on the idea of doing tricks.
Jody Sperling’s feats, from belly rolls to contortionist exercises and high kicks, all performed with a deadpan demeanor, are calculated to charm and startle the viewer. Roberto Pace’s score draws on music hall motifs.

“Superficially, ‘Cheap’ is a comic acrobatic dance gone awry, as Sperling becomes entangled in a cord she’s attached to her ankle. The image of female bondage makes it less amusing, especially as the audience laughter simply confirms the moral of the piece: what women will do to please and impress.”
