“Dreamy, Marine yearnings”
—The village voice

Washed Up, solo distillation (2001)

Solo, 10 minutes

Jody Sperling’s version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid uses an idiosyncratic lyricism to conjure up a mythic aquatic realm.

Set in the lush underwater landscape created by Quentin Chiappetta’s score of liquidy sounds, gamelan, cello, voice, and other instrumentations, Sperling’s fluid acrobatics and preening gestures meld to suggest archetypal images of femininity.

CHOREOGRAPHY/DANCER: Jody Sperling
MUSIC: Quentin Chiappetta

“In a solo version of ‘Washed Up,’ Sperling becomes the fairy-tale mermaid who loved a human, revealing dreamy, marine yearnings and then the painful reality (wonderfully imagined) of walking.”
